A first preparatory session for the 2011 biennale, also known as the A.D.C.N.I, was held on our Island in 2007. This event revealed, with great success, the work of artists from seven different countries. Today, the Reunion Island is proud to announce that it will officially host a second preparatory session of the 2011 biennale. The session will take place between 20th November and 23rd December 2009.
The age we live in is marked by great changes :
Communication technology has improved dramatically, resulting in the modification of our natural environment, the shortening of distances between people and an increased flow of knowledge and know-how throughout the continents.
The financial crisis and its catastrophic consequences for international social and economic well-being.
Severe environmental imbalances on a global scale, making people question our way of living.
The A.D.C.N.I sees itself as the intersection of the cultures and civilisations of Africa, Europe, and Asia. Its aim is to put the emerging artistic expression of the countries of the so-called “economic south” in the spotlight and to favour digital art around the world.
The biennale also strives to :
Change the meaning of the words “contemporary” and “modern” because a third of humanity seems to have been excluded from them ! We believe that the shear depth of thought found in the art of the countries of the “economical south” can significantly contribute to the creation of new modes of development, urgently needed in our world.
Favour research and creation inspired by local environments and integrate them into our globalised world.
Nourish the understanding of cultural differences between people by means of mutual respect for everyone’s creativity and despite xenophobic feelings that usually appear in times of crisis.
Encourage and guide digital and non-material art, favour sustainable development on a cultural, intercultural and economic basis and support long-distance partnerships between artists.
The biennale further strives to turn our island into a creative melting pot. For this reason, successful applicants will be welcomed as resident artists at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-arts of the Reunion Island and become part of the “science and art” research group. This group studies the subject of “landscape” in all its dimensions : natural, human, urban, virtual…
The works or designs created as part of this residency will be exhibited during the biennale. They will be accessible to the general public but also to local and international professionals such as the international commission for exhibitions and biennale, specialised media representatives, members of economic organisations, etc…

As part of this second preparatory session of the 2011 biennale, an exhibition of the works of twenty-odd young and talented emerging artists from the “south” will take place.
These works will have been created during the residency of these artists at the Research Deparment of the “Ecole Supérieure des Beaux Arts” of the Reunion Island.
Artists will benefit from a 3-month residency before presenting the fruit of their work at the international exhibition, which will be inaugurated on November 20th 2009.
A network of cultural institutions and art, design and visual art universities from the different countries of the “economic south”, including Australia, China, India, Indian Ocean Islands, Africa and South America.
The Möbius International organisation, which will focus on digital art.
The final selection will be made by the artistic committee of the biennale on the basis of the dossier of the candidate. As a result of this selection, each participating country will have one or two artists representing them. The status of resident artist at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-arts of the Reunion Island implies a series of benefits.
